Afarer custom SUP boards description

Challenges for Yoga & Wellness Brands

Four challenges your business faces — and how Afarer solves each one.

Normal SUP Boards Are Not Designed for Yoga

Standard recreational SUP focuses on paddling performance, speed, and maneuverability. SUP Yoga requires maximum stability, large practice area, comfortable surface, and low movement response.

Stability Determines the Yoga Experience

During yoga practice, users need confidence. An unstable board creates difficulty maintaining poses, reduced relaxation, and poor user experience. Professional SUP Yoga boards need wider dimensions and balanced weight distribution.

Aesthetic Design Is Critical for Wellness Brands

Wellness customers care about visual harmony, premium feeling, and emotional connection. Generic outdoor products look too sporty or aggressive. Yoga brands need products that match calm, natural aesthetics.

Experience Providers Need Reliable Equipment

Yoga studios and retreats need products for frequent classes and group activities. Equipment must provide durability, comfort, easy operation, and consistent quality for professional environments.

Maldives Luxury Resort Chain Deploys SUP Yoga Programme

Location

North Malé Atoll, Maldives

Background

The 'Azure Collection' operates 4 luxury resorts across the Maldives: Azure North (North Malé Atoll), Azure South (South Malé Atoll), Azure Private Island (Baa Atoll), and Azure Retreat (Raa Atoll). Their group wellness director, Simone Devereux, 39, a former professional yoga instructor from Australia, had been with Azure for 7 years. In 2022, Simone surveyed 2,800 guests across all 4 properties and found that 73% of guests expressed interest in SUP yoga classes, but only 12% actually booked—with the primary barrier being 'lack of confidence on a narrow board' (cited by 64% of non-bookers). The existing SUP fleet (3-year-old boards from a generic Chinese OEM) was 14 boards total, suited for flatwater paddling but unstable for yoga: 32" wide boards with slippery EVA decks. Simone needed a purpose-built SUP yoga board fleet with extra width, a cushioned, non-slip deck surface suitable for barefoot yoga practice, and the ability to handle up to 350 lbs for partner yoga poses.

Goal

To deploy a fleet of 40 specialized SUP yoga boards across 4 resorts, develop a tiered SUP yoga programme (Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, Partner) with trained instructors, and increase SUP yoga booking conversion from 12% to 35% within 12 months.

Step 1 - Yoga-Specific Board Design and Sanskrit Aesthetics

Afarer's design team spent 3 weeks in March 2023 studying Simone's requirements. The result: 'Serenity' SUP yoga board—34" wide (versus standard 32"), 11'6" length, with a 7-layer drop-stitch core for rigid stability. The deck featured a 6-mm thick closed-cell EVA pad with a diamond-pattern texture (tested coefficient of friction: 0.85 dry, 0.72 wet) covering 85% of the deck surface. Afarer incorporated a Sanskrit 'Om' symbol in silver reflective heat-transfer on the nose and a lotus pattern around the centre carry handle. The boards came in 4 colors (coral, turquoise, sunset orange, lagoon blue) corresponding to the 4 Azure Resort color palettes. Each board had 8 stainless steel D-rings—4 for a bungee cord system to secure yoga mats, and 4 for optional anchor lines for stationary practice in currents.

Step 2 - Pilot Programme at Azure North with Yoga Instructor Training

Afarer produced 15 prototype boards and shipped them via express air freight (Singapore Airlines Cargo) for a 6-week pilot at Azure North starting 1 June 2023. Simone and 4 resident yoga instructors completed a 40-hour SUP Yoga Instructor Certification program developed jointly by Afarer's wellness consultants and Yoga Alliance professionals. The certification covered: board setup and inflation for yoga (12 PSI for maximum stability), class sequencing for water conditions, safety protocols for wind and current, and 15 unique SUP yoga poses adapted for the board environment. The pilot ran 42 classes over 6 weeks with 186 guest participants. Pre- and post-pilot surveys showed guest confidence improved 58%, and the average class rating was 4.8/5. Guest feedback highlighted two modifications: request for a paddle holder on the board edge (so paddles don't float away during practice) and a preference for boards with a 'soft' nose radius for partner poses.

Step 3 - Multi-Resort Rollout, Infrastructure, and Programming

Based on the successful pilot, Azure placed a PO for 40 Serenity boards (10 per resort) in August 2023. Afarer added two design modifications based on pilot feedback: a silicone paddle keeper strap on the starboard rail and a 15-cm wider nose radius (from 45 cm to 60 cm radius) for partner pose clearance. Afarer shipped via sea freight with a dedicated 20-ft container, including 40 custom inflation pumps with pressure gauges calibrated to PSI instead of bar. The shipment arrived at Malé on 1 November 2023. Simone trained 12 additional instructors across the 4 resorts (3 per property) using the certification curriculum, with two lead instructors participating in a 2-week train-the-trainer program in Bali (coordinated by Afarer's wellness partner). Each resort established a dedicated SUP yoga launch point with floating dock, equipment storage, and a shaded relaxation area.

Step 4 - Revenue Performance, Guest Retention, and Programme Expansion

The SUP yoga programme launched across all 4 resorts on 1 December 2023. In the first 5 months (December 2023–April 2024 peak season), 3,410 guests participated in 846 classes. Booking conversion for SUP yoga reached 31%—below the 35% target but significantly above the 12% baseline. Average revenue per participating guest was $145 (USD) per session, generating $494,450 in incremental revenue. Simone noted that 22% of SUP yoga participants booked a second class during their stay, and 8% extended their hotel stay by one night specifically for the SUP yoga programme. The programme received coverage in Conde Nast Traveller (March 2024) and Travel + Leisure (April 2024), further boosting pre-bookings. Azure ordered 20 additional boards in March 2024 for a planned new resort opening in the Fuvahmulah Atoll.

Results

SUP yoga booking conversion increased from 12% to 31%, approaching the 35% target within 5 months Incremental revenue of $494,450 generated from SUP yoga sessions across 4 resorts in peak season (Dec 2023–Apr 2024) 22% of participants booked repeat SUP yoga classes during their stay, indicating strong guest satisfaction 6.7% less sunscreen runoff into protected reef areas measured by Azure's marine biologist, as guests were educated on reef-safe products during SUP yoga orientation

California Yoga Teacher Creates Signature SUP Yoga Brand

Location

Santa Monica, California, United States

Background

Kai Yoshida, 36, has been a professional yoga instructor since 2014 and a certified SUP yoga instructor since 2017. She built a following of 53,000 Instagram followers and 8,400 YouTube subscribers through her 'Calm Waters Yoga' channel featuring beach yoga at Santa Monica, Venice Beach, and Malibu. Since 2019, she had been offering pop-up SUP yoga classes using rented boards from a local SUP rental company. By 2022, she was teaching 8–12 classes per month with 12–18 students per class at $55/student, but the rental arrangement gave her inconsistent board quality (worn EVA pads, valve issues on 3 occasions) and only 38% net margin. Kai wanted to launch her own brand, 'Drift & Downward Dog', with a signature board design reflecting her California beach aesthetic, and expand to 20+ classes per month across Santa Monica Bay.

Goal

To create a proprietary SUP yoga board brand with 3 SKUs (yoga-focused all-around, a premium extra-wide 'studio' board, and a kid-friendly mini-SUP for family classes), launch a DTC website and scheduled class booking platform, and achieve $250,000 in first-year combined product and class revenue.

Step 1 - Yoga Instructor's Design Vision and Ergonomic Studio Board

Afarer's product designers flew to Santa Monica in February 2023 to observe 4 of Kai's classes and understand her teaching style. Kai taught a blend of Vinyasa flow, restorative yin, and partner acro-yoga on boards—requiring more deck space than standard SUPs offered. Afarer designed 3 SKUs: (1) 'Drift 10'6"'—standard SUP yoga board (34" wide, 6 mm deck pad), (2) 'Studio 12'0"'—extra-wide board at 38" with an 8 mm cushioned deck (designed for acro and partner poses, max weight 450 lbs), and (3) 'Mini 9'0"'—kid-friendly board (30" wide, 5 mm deck, bright color options). The Studio board featured a unique 'centerline alignment marker'—a subtle printed line down the middle of the deck to help students align their mats consistently. All boards used Afarer's Fusion-Lite drop-stitch technology, weighing 3 lbs less than standard boards for easier handling.

Step 2 - Brand Identity, Content Production, and Pre-Sale Strategy

Afarer's creative team developed Drift & Downward Dog's visual identity: a minimalist logo with a stylized lotus/mandala-wave hybrid, a color palette of sage green, sand, and ocean blue, and a custom font pair (Lora headings, Nunito body). They produced a 6-day photoshoot in March 2023 across 5 Santa Monica Bay locations (Santa Monica Pier, Malibu's Point Dume, Venice Beach, Marina del Rey, and Paradise Cove), generating 480 final images and 8 hours of 4K video footage. Kai launched a 30-day presale on 1 May 2023 through a Kickstarter campaign with a $35,000 goal. The campaign featured 3 reward tiers: early-bird Drift board ($599, 40 units), Studio board package with mat and strap ($949, 25 units), and Mini board ($449, 20 units). The campaign hit its goal in 11 hours and closed at $74,200 from 118 backers.

Step 3 - Production, Fulfillment Logistics, and Class Integration

Production of 180 boards (80 Drift, 50 Studio, 50 Mini) ran June–July 2023 at Afarer's Vietnam facility. By 1 August 2023, all Kickstarter orders were fulfilled from a 3PL warehouse in Long Beach (15 miles from Kai's Santa Monica studio). Kai launched her class booking platform on Shopify with a custom scheduling app integrated with Acuity Scheduling. She offered 4 class types: 'Sunrise Flow' (beginner, Drift board), 'Full Moon Studio' (advanced/partner, Studio board), 'Family Paddle' (kids + parents, Mini + Drift), and 'Restorative Yin & Float' (combination of yin poses and guided meditation). She hired 3 additional certified SUP yoga instructors to handle the expanded schedule. By September 2023, Kai was running 22 classes per week with an average of 14 students per class.

Step 4 - Retail Channel Expansion, Corporate Wellness, and Year 2 Growth

In October 2023, Kai was approached by REI's Southern California regional buyer who had attended one of her classes. REI placed a test order for 30 Drift boards and 15 Mini boards for 5 Santa Monica–area stores. Afarer adapted the packaging to include REI-compliant hang tags and QR-code product registration. By December 2023, the REI sell-through rate reached 82% across the 5 stores, REI placed a follow-on order for 100 boards across 20 Southern California locations. Kai also launched a corporate wellness programme—contracting with 4 tech companies (Google Venice, Hulu Santa Monica, and two others) to provide weekly on-site SUP yoga classes as an employee benefit. The corporate programme generated $4,200/month in recurring revenue. By the end of Year 1 (March 2024), Drift & Downward Dog had generated $342,000 in combined revenue (product sales: $218,000, class revenue: $94,000, corporate wellness: $30,000).

Results

First-year combined revenue of $342,000 exceeded the $250,000 target by 36.8% Kickstarter campaign raised $74,200—212% of the $35,000 goal—from 118 backers in 30 days REI sell-through of 82% across 5 Southern California stores led to a chain-wide expansion order of 100 boards Class attendance grew from 12 classes/month (140 students) to 88 classes/month (1,232 students), a 780% increase
